Pan does not mark all articles as read without you specifically
telling it to. What you're probably seeing is that, next time you look
at them, they are no longer "new" (bold black type, by default) but
should still show as "unread" (normal black type). Read articles are
shown in gray type, at least if you haven't changed your color scheme.
