what occurs to me is just to have a 'flying' tooltip that appears when you
mouseover the message, which will list in a multi-line format (if necessary)
all the information about the message. (full subject, status, flags, author,
date, size, etc).

that way if you want to get more information about a message, you can just
fly your mouse over it and it'll pop up all the information you want.

this will also make Pan more manageable on small displays, where you can't
devote as much space to subject lines.
