By `catching up articles', you're talking about downloading new headers?
Fetching headers hardly even shows up on the CPU meter, even on my
measly 450 mhz box.  The bottleneck there is the network, which Pan
can't control.

The optimizations in 0.14.0.90 are focused on CPU-intensive tasks,
such as threading, sorting, filter, and populating the header pane.
