Editing the scorefile as well, or just composing messages (including
followup, reply by mail and forward)?

If Pan crashes only when composing:  Is Pan compiled with spell
checking enabled?  If that's the case, and some of the gtkspell or
aspell libraries are missing or compiled against incompatible versions
of the libstdc++ (or whatever Red Hat calls it) library, Pan will most
likely crash when trying to open the compose window.
