        Hmmm ..... Two thoughts: I use gnome-terminal rather than xterm; 
and I keep font size, background color, and other things carefully 
configured, differently for several different tabs, all of which I keep 
open all the time (on a workspace of their own). 

        Is it safe to assume there would be some way of putting the extra 
switches, or parameters, or whatever, into the terminal as called from 
pan to expand it then and only then?
