the outer part is slightly different for transparent and xbee messages,
they are shown at

http://paparazzi.enac.fr/wiki/Messages_Format

There is the logger code that parses the outer part of a message and
some example code that generates a message and allows to print data from
the serial port:

sw/airborne/main_logger.c
sw/in_progress/turbine/
