Well, 8 years ago, before I joined the paparazzi, I succeeded in building a 
very basical autopilot with just a PIC, some thermopiles and a GPS.
You basically have to write the code to stabilize the plane with the 
thermopiles and the code to move the rudder to follow the waypoints. 
It worked with the twinstar.
You will be far away from what you can achieve with the paparazzi, but you will 
have made a system of your own...
