I would suggest using Dev-C++ (http://www.bloodshed.net/devcpp.html).
There are projectfiles for Dev-C++ (but outdated). It shouldn't be to
hard to adapt these.
AFAIK, it's impossible to compile the 1.1.x tree on Visual C++ 6.0.
There are some issues with templates and template default params. But
maybe it's possible, who knows, ...

I've tried to get started using MSYS, but just getting deeper and
deeper into installing prerequisites (latest, automake-1.8 is
required,
and MSYS-DTK has 1.7).
What I'm hoping for is an easyly upgradable (cvs update + make) image
that'd give static libs for both of the above mentioned compilers.
What should I do?
