There was a discusssion of this a long ago (about 2years
ago). I have spent some time trying to find the thread in
the old sf.net mail archives - but they don't really support
searching.
The result of the old discussion was prepending phpgw_ to
all table names.
A few points to keep in mind though.
Performance
Prepending the table prefix to each query would add a
performance hit. For example to render a page creates about
10 queries - for a normal app. So it many only be a
fraction of a second each time the prefix is added, but this
soon adds up.
Work
This is a lot of work to implement this, and it will break
stuff for quite a while. Every query in every app will need
to be changed, setup/update scripts written, and something
added to the header. This will also needed to be thoroughly
tested. At the moment we are quite thin on the ground, and
I know many of our devs have high priority items.
Cost Benefit Analysis
I see this only being of benefit to users with very
restricted hosting deals. Whereas making the change we
create a lot of work, add an extra point of failure, and
degrade performance. Maybe you could shop around for a new
host - such as www.finalhost.net (sponsored advertisement).
I will close this report and forward it to the developer
list - phpgroupware-developers at gnu.org ... you can either
read the discussion in the archives
(http://mail.gnu.org/archive/html/phpgroupware-developers/2003-07/threads.html)
it is upto 24hours behind or subscribe to the
list(http://mail.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/phpgroupware-developers).
Cheers
