Did you start Postgres with the -i Option?

Do a netstat -tan and you should see something like 
 tcp 0 0 127.0.0.1:5432 127.0.0.1:35472  ESTABLISHED
                   ^^^^
If nothing listens on 5432 you should start your postmaster with -i
