LDAP is the way to go for this. We migrated our samba PDC to LDAP two
weeks ago, and most things are fine, but some configs still need to be
updated (add user script, which needs to be updated to create LDAP
accounts).

I used samba's pam password change parameter to get passwords into LDAP
on password change (via pam_ldap), and can now authenticate phpgw
against LDAP.

You might want to take a look at the LDAP article on
http://www.mandrakesecure.net.

You can get samba-ldap RPMs for Mandrake 8.x on ftp.samba.org (in binary
packages). They just need to be updated for some recent patches (working
TLS for one).
