ah, I had forgotten that we have php-native code pop3 support, I don't
know how well it was tested so there may be an incomparability with
your mail server.

IMAP will require the php-imap module to be loaded.  If I were you I'd
lobby for my host to add this module, IMAP is a much better way to use
webmail.
