i never release it, so surely something you expect from a distributed
tarball may not work. anyway i do not expect substantial problems. i'll
fix them, if any.

this makes me think you are using automake < 1.5. please install
automake1.6 or automake1.7 or automake1.8 packages. then update
your alternatives in order to make one of these the default
(update-alternatives --config automake).
