For the record, it should be
LDFLAGS=-L$HOME/lib CFLAGS=-I$HOME/include
I just discovered $HOME is on an NFS server, but the error is the same
even with --prefix=$BUILDIR.
I can't see why an NFS mounted $HOME should be a problem, unless your
compiling as root.
