Right. I think I'm beginning to understand. I bet this problem only manifests itself on the VM. I think a native windows running version will work fine.
Sadly no. It also happens on my native Windows.Here is the dump of filename as integer and as a string right before the call to any_reader_may_open:

Pspp is really trying to use a utf8 string as non-utf8. Michel
