Great.  I checked in a few commits to tidy it up a bit.  

What is the story with xr_driver_destroy ?  There's a prototype
in cairo.h but no definition exists.  Does the driver need to be explicity

     My copy of glade-3 (version 3.6.7 according to --version) doesn't
     like output-viewer.ui (it basically shows up as blank) so it took
     me a few tries to edit the new menu item into the file by hand
     during the merge.

No.   I've given up (at least temporarily) trying to get menus editable via
glade.
