We don't need to have an array but we can get the memory region with
address_space_translate() when mapping or with memory_region_from_host()
when unmapping.
Yeah, I guess that works. Lots of memory_region_ref()/memory_region_unref() calls, but I guess the address_space_translate() call is much more expensive anyway. I originally wanted to store the physical range of the RAM region so we don't need to keep looking up the physical address on mapping, but there does not seem to be a good way to obtain the guest-physical start address of the result of a address_space_translate() call as only part of the region might be mapped contiguously. (Unless you've got a good suggestion for that? I was wondering about subtracting the offset returned from address_space_translate() from the guest physical address then re-running address_space_translate() with that and the memory region's size to check if all of it is mapped.)
For background:
In my testing, the system performs thousands of these IOSurface memory mappings per second, with tens of thousands of mappings alive at any time. The vast majority are 1 page [16KiB] in size, and they are unmapped in batches of tens of thousands. In practice, there is only one MemoryRegion involved in all of this, which is the MemoryRegion containing all of the VM's system memory. So all of this lookup and referencing and unreferencing ultimately seems pretty pointless because all that really needs to be done is work out the offset in guest RAM and add it to the host-side pointer. But hypothetically, the RAM topology could be more complex, so we have to jump through all these hoops.
The situation is similar in the task memory-mapping callback of the main/common PVG device, except there aren't so many mappings and they are larger. As that's also used in the PCI variant, you also get to deal with the fun of the non-contiguous x86-64 guest system memory.

Use GPtrArray.
Thanks, I wasn't aware of this variant.

Use qemu_create_displaysurface() and let DisplaySurface manage the
memory for us.
Yeah, I guess the default pixel format is a close enough match, and now that the texture content is copied synchronously under the BQL we don't need to deal with the memory ourselves anymore.

It seems this function only requires RCU read lock and we can avoid
using bottom half.
Yes, I think that should work. We'll still need something to serialise access to the task's mapped_regions array, but we can use the task_mutex instead of the BQL for that.
I guess dma_memory_read() also only needs an RCU guard, so readMemory should also be safe to run without the BQL?

This would be better off using a bottom half since it is going to take
the BQL.
Yeah, I guess that should work now that we've eliminated any calls into PVG while holding the BQL.
