Just FYI, It's the --disable-smartcard that fixed this:
smartcard requires nss, and:
$ pkg-config --libs nss
-lssl3 -lsmime3 -lnss3 -lnssutil3 -lplds4 -lplc4 -lnspr4 -lpthread -ldl
