I did a quick experiment first thing this morning and it really is just the 
Windows
linker ld.exe that requires a Windows-style path, since I was able to 
successfully
build with just this:

I'll try again with the relocatable install later - do I still need to pass 
--prefix
into configure or should I leave that for now and just use DESTDIR?
