still used by internal C code (esp. board code),

Are internal uses mostly just right after object creation, or do we make
a lot of use of them during runtime?

Not "a lot" but enough to be nasty. There are a couple uses of "well-known" QOM properties (e.g. to access the RTC time or the balloon stats), plus "info qtree".
