Maybe these 405 boards in QEMU ran with modified firmware where the memory detection was patched outI guess you're right - the code also expects a file called ppc405_rom.bin, and not u-boot.bin, so this board was likely used with a completely different firmware (which is not available anymore), not with u-boot...
