[Quilt-dev] [PATCH 0/4] Safety, convenience, and capability extension

Here are some patches I have been using for some time now.  The first
two guard against data loss due to user error, the next is a
convenience, and the last patch adds a very general capability that I've
found helpful in more than one application.

There are no functional dependencies between the patches, but there are
some file collisions, hence the arrangement in a series.
