This doesn't sound right. You could see exxe as a new build dependency so
that you're able to run the test suite.

I don't follow you at all here. There's no reason to believe that exxe
would not be portable.

There's nothing here that could prevent you from using it. The tool you're
referring to (autopkgtest) can install arbitrary dependencies and it can
also give you an unpacked source tree.
