It is possible. The software contains known bugs.

The original patch is for a very old version of qemu. You're better off
just trying 0.8.0 and hand patching any rejects.
I did post a patch for qvm86 + qemu cvs a while ago, but it was never applied
(I assume that Paul is simply too busy with other projects to test and review
it.)
