Aha! I finally worked out how to xinit an xnest: xinit -- /usr/X11R6/bin/Xnest

Anything that has a diagnostic output. Stuff like gkrellm, but not so
bloated. Possibly xmms or gimp13's toolbox. Stuff which uses little
space, never occupies a full frame and generally sits around the edge
of the screen permanently under other WMs. I miss IceWM's minimalist
load meter, because I don't notice runaway processes on this new box.
If i got off my arse and wrote them, the xgraph and xbit utils[0].

for DVD, ogle works good.
-twb
[0] xgraph: run <foo> every <bar> seconds, casting it's output to a
float and graphing it, with no borders & monochrome. xbit: run <foo>
every <bar>, be a white rectangle if <foo> succeeds and a black rect
if fails.
