Follow-up Comment #1:

It looks like some of the traceback is missing.  Try running at verbosity 5
at least, and then post a lot of the log.

The problem is that almost all failures look like gzip problems.  This is
because rdiff-backup is pipelined and most of the pipeline is gzip
compressed, so if one part of the pipeline breaks, the data stops or gets
garbled, and then all the others break when gzip can process the data.

So anyway, if you see a problem don't just look at the end, read all the
traceback stuff.
