Follow-up Comment #2:

This set of commands currently WorksForMe in rdiff-backup 1.1.7. Are you sure
this is still a bug? I have tested under Python 2.4 (you are running 2.3
below), but I believe the code under discussion will work in 2.3.

If you find that this is still a bug for you, can you send in a better test
case? i.e., how to reproduce the bug. Also, what version of rdiff-backup,
etc.?
