Also, the author's copyright notices doesn't include '(C)' - we
recommend adding it, though this isn't mandatory.
I don't think there is a reason to recommend it, or not recommend it.
Was there a specific reason to recommend it?
When I researched it on the US Library of Congress web site (and what I
could find on Berne in general), there was no indication that the three
characters "(C)" had any legal significance whatsoever. C-in-a-circle
does (equivalent to the word "Copyright"). It would not be wise to
assume that "(C)" has the same legal meaning, although computer
programmers may have assumed otherwise. I couldn't find any actual law
or precedent or information about it.
The right thing to do is always write the word "Copyright" (always in
English, too); whether there is a "(C)" is immaterial. It doesn't harm
anything to have it, but it's definitely not necessary.
