Generally a good question, but given the details below, probably
irrelevant as don't expect any normal user to compile Screen from the
git master branch.

We won't have a release from the master branch anytime soon, so I
think this might be a misleading advice — unless you just want
confirmation that it is really fixed in master.

I assume you refer to your commit
4dd664149c166409b4bd20ada3144a1968f6f355. (Found it by looking for
"David" in the git log. :-)

I indeed don't see an equivalent commit in the screen-v4 stable
branch. I wonder if we should try backport this to screen-v4 as it
seems to be a bug fix and not a feature.

Or what was the reason that this only went into the master branch?
