O gnu/sed tem uma opção que faz o backup e ao mesmo
tempo edita o arquivo sem precisar renomear
sed -i.backup '/#I"etc"/,/^#F"etc"/d' /etc/smb.conf
veja se o seu sed tem esta opção "-i"
man sed...
-i[SUFFIX], --in-place[=SUFFIX]
edit files in place (makes backup if extension supplied)
