Move to hand-written Makefiles?

Hi,

Our autotools build system needs quite the makeover, and I'm willing to
try. But, is there any chance we can switch to hand-written Makefiles
that retain the same ./configure && make && make install interface? I've
recently switched to hand-written Makefiles in some of my Guile projects
and find that it works well enough and is way easier to manage.

What do you think?
