Why not use xsetbg? It works with PNG files, I am sure - all I have are PNGs and my wallpapers seem to show up...
i tried that but my BASH says: "command not found". same for "xloadimage" :( (i have set the background using "~/.fehbg" but i am really interested in those 2 commands i mentioned above) -- http://arnuld.blogspot.com/
