Thanks for reporting this Scott!  I have had evince trouble for the past
month and not been able to find a solution. I'll document this on the
wiki for the rest of us.  

A quick google search indicates that this is a problem that should be
handled upstream of the window manager.  I suspect that desktop
environments have been handling this in different places, and hence
recent updates appeared to break it in stumpwm.
