Good point Doug
As an ecologist that does individual/agent-based modelling with both physiological detail and behavioural interaction, I find it quite annoying to come across papers where ecologists just do one or the other yet claim to have developed a definitive IBM - perhaps we should use "agent based" more to emphasise the interactions of computational agents = individual organisms, and "individual based" where there really are some detailed physiological or simplified internal state-dependent processes represented, upon which the behaviour of the agents depends.
I don't think we'll lose either word in favour of the other but ecologists certainly have to look at A/IBMs with a critical eye because of this confusion.

However, individual based has a double meaning in Ecology. It is also used
to describe equation based, complex physiological models. I believe
therefore that ecological modelers should start using "agent based" to
describe ecological where species are represented as autonomous individuals.
At leastsome other modelers are in agreement with me on this (somewhat
minor) point.
