High End PC's

Here is a warning to all of you who are using LINUX and thinking
about upgrading your PC.

1.) Be careful that your new mother board supports the ATA UDMA
hard drives through the standard EIDE ports. Older mother boards
that do not have this support are using plug-in cards such as the
Promise Ultra-33. All hard drives then MUST interface to the
computer through this board. There are NO LINUX drivers for it,
so you either must use the hard drive without the extra speed
or send the system back to GATEWAY. Guess which I did.

2.) Check both your LINUX provider and the XFREE86 site for
vidio card compatibility. The latest and greatest cards are
often not yet supported in freeware. They also tend to be so
smart that they can't just act like a VGA16 or equivelent, so once
again you have to trade it back back for one that is supported.

3.) If your modem is Plug-and-Play, LINUX won't touch it. That
is also true for any other Plug-and-Play devices.

Moral: LINUX support lags behind high end technology, research it
first. (Do as I say, not as I do!?)

Cheers,

   Doug

PS On the other hand, the speed up on my new machine is great!
