What version of synaptic and what distro and what version of the
distro do you use? I tink I have not seen that on debian and ubuntu
yet.
address@hidden:~# dpkg -l | egrep "synaptic\>"
ii synaptic 0.83+b1 i386 Graphical package manager
address@hidden:~#

On both my laptop (i386) and my desktop (amd64) computer I use Debian sid. On both systems, TERM is not set.

Any special settings that I should know about when trying to
reproduce? Setting the TERM from inside synaptic for the build-in vte
terminal is simpke. But I would like to understand the issue a bit
better first.
Not sure if that matters: I use the current version of the MATE desktop environment. If you need any further information, feel free to ask!

Best regards

Andreas
