I guess I initialized my cluster in the wrong place?

Just move the "*.conf" files to a subdirectory "config/".

So

$ cd ~/Code/forks/taler/test/config
$ mkdir config
$ mv *.conf config/
$ taler-mint-keyup -d . -m master.priv

should work.
