Appears Debian's IceWeasel is way back on FireFox 38 ESR too.

There was some discussion amongst a subset of Tor, IceWeasel, and IceCat
of partially standardizing their FireFox modifications. In principle,
one could advocate for cooperation at least initially on the first
FireFox ESR after version 48, maybe accelerating the conversion.

p.s. Mozilla has public discussions on what they wish to add beyond
Google's WebExtensions too :

I doubt we want anything there, except perhaps a correctly done
"payments" hook that allows us to hide that Taler is installed.

I wonder if the browser could simply provide an API for "Invisible
APIs"? If the extension is installed, then it executes the API call,
but if not then it does nothing. I suppose one needs invisible portions
of the DOM then too, which becomes more problematic. That is not enough
for badly behaved payment apps like the W3C is interested in, but still.
