Thanks for the report. The fix was in fact quite easy since for an
external node the parenthesis should only have matched when at the node 
beginning.

Still, something like

@node (manual)node 

leads to similar warning and rather incorrect output. But it isn't a
real issue since makeinfo also complains and leads to somewhat incorrect
output.

I have done a test case based on your examples, with the
(manual)node also, and added to the TODO. The test case is in
Tests/formatting/nodename_parentheses.texi
