I finally fixed my problem. Apparently the version of glibc (the package
the crtn.o file came from) was old, so I tried updating it and now tcc
appears to be working. :-)
for anyone who cares: the version of glibc that did not work was
2.3.6-r4, and the version that appears to be working now is 2.5-r3
