Done some more investigation....
It appears the Printing HOWTO is outdated. For 2.2 and 2.4 kernels the
following scheme applies:

/dev/lp0 = 0x378 = default printer port
/dev/lp1 = 0x278

So we were right after all. Wolf explained to me in a private mail that
0x3bc was used on some old hardware.
