I think it's better to keep /etc/ld.so.conf system-wide (no user
specific stuff), you can set LD_LIBRARY_PATH instead:

export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/home/foo/traverso/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
cleancompile
...
