What I did was to set the following five variables in my .vm:
(setq vm-folder-directory "~/post/")
(setq vm-spool-file-suffixes '(".in"))
(setq vm-crash-box-suffix ".CRASH")
(setq vm-primary-inbox (concat vm-folder-directory "INBOX"))
(setq vm-crash-box (concat vm-primary-inbox vm-crash-box-suffix))
