[VM] Internal display failed; use external viewer? (y or n) y

With emacs-26.1, and the latest VM version  (rev no 1531; see below), I am getting:

Internal display failed; use external viewer? (y or n) y

Hit y or space works. I took a look at the code but it involves callbacks that are beyond my meager lisp knowledge. Anyone else seeing this?
