That Annotate / Revert are greyed out initially is normal: these only
get enabled when you are actually in a variation that you can revert from.

To start a variation, you should play a move with the Shift key pressed,
while not at the end of the game. (At the end there is nothing to vary on,
and the move would simply be added to the end of the main line.)
This should enable Annotate and Revert.

If not, that would be a bug. But for me, it works.
