Yes. X is about the "next generation" of terminal user interface. Just
as the Linux kernel supports networking as well as disk storage and
program multiplexing to allow a complete operating system on top, so the
X server is intended to provide support so a complete user interface can
be built on top.
X server == User Interface, Linux kernel == Program Interface.
Both are necessary.
There is no reason why the limitations of the past should blinker our
thinking about tomorrow.
