Ok. I'll send when I have something. I was thinking about trying to
push size_t as far as possible. In other email (or doc?) you proposed
some different solutions, I'll play with them to see what feels best.

Any of the other branches (cleanup|refactor) are going forward? Should
I keep an eye on them? Or focus my changes on mainline (or in a branch
from mainline)?
