The problem is that I can't even open the file to delete, or even list any
variables, and it's over 500mb in size.
We got around the problem by opening the file in spss (i'm not sure which
version) and saving from spss.

Thank you for the bug report.  It is not enough for me to
determine where the bug lies.

You could probably delete almost everything and it would still be
enough to find the problem.  You could, for example, delete all
the variables, other that the ones that are members of the
multiple response se,t and delete all of the cases.  If you can
pass along the file that SPSS saves after doing that, then I can
probably fix the problem.
