It does, and it would be easy to set things up for just .php files. I think 
it's the .class files that are the issue, as there are different kinds of 
.class files emacs can understand (including java .class files), so it's handy 
to have something in the file that explicitly tells it what kind of .class file 
it's dealing with.

Of course, we've probably wasted far too much time and bandwidth on this 
already.... :-)
