OK, tried with tracing, then used truss - and it's obvious:
# ls -lL /dev/bmc
/dev/bmc: No such file or directory
(dev/bmc/ is a symlink and I initially neglected to look at the real target
device file :( )
I'll try and figure where it's gone!
